Saliva is a watery, viscous fluid composed of secretions of the
parotid, submandibular sublingual and other minor salivary glands; serous
transudate; cells {epithelial and leukocytes); microorganisms; and food
particles. Saliva contains a complex mixture of organic and inorganic materials
that fall into the following categories:
Electrolytes – Enzymes – Low molecular weight compounds – Hormones – Proteins
(Antibodies) – Vitamins
